Dixons Newall Green Academy
Overview
The new Dixons Newall Green Academy in Wythenshawe, Manchester, provides 750 places for pupils aged 11 to 16, supporting the local community with a modern, purpose-built secondary school.
Throughout delivery, Morgan Sindall, the main contractor, worked closely with the Department for Education (DfE) to ensure the project remained cost effective, on programme, and aligned with national education design standards.
Bennett Architectural was appointed by Morgan Sindall to support the design, development, fabrication, and installation of the school’s aluminium glazing systems.
The Challenge
The glazing systems needed to meet a broad range of performance and safety requirements typical of modern educational buildings, including:
- High thermal performance
- Durability for heavy daily use
- Safety compliance in sports and teaching environments
- Fire protection requirements
- Integration with specialist components such as louvres
These constraints required a well-considered approach from both our design and installation teams.
Our Solution
Bennett Architectural delivered a tailored glazing package that met the functional, environmental, and safety needs of the academy. The systems installed included:
1. Kawneer AA720 Windows & Doors
- Triple glazed to achieve the required U‑values
- Designed to improve the school’s long term thermal efficiency
- Built for durability in a high traffic educational setting
2. Sports England Rebound Doors
Installed within the sports hall to ensure the safety of students and staff during physical activity.
These doors offer enhanced impact resistance, supporting the demanding environment of school sports facilities.
3. Louvres Supplied by Gilberts
Louvres were installed to ensure proper airflow and ventilation throughout the building, supporting comfort and overall building performance.
4. 30 Minute Fire Rated Doors
Fire safety was a priority, particularly within circulation areas.
The installation of FD30 fire rated door systems ensured safe evacuation routes and compliance with building regulations.
